Review

"A remarkable job of capturing the story of the Criterion Collection.Absolutely spot on and highly illuminating...A balanced, coherent, and compelling narrative." - Michael Nash, Executive Vice President, Digital Strategy and Business Development, Warner Music Group.

"A fascinating account of the evolution of home video from the laserdisc to the DVD with its multiple track audio commentaries and rich supplementary content enabling the broader public to engage more deeply in cinema studies. The book s in-depth interviews and critical analysis gives an unequaled first person perspective and deep insight into film studies in the modern age." - Curtis Wong, Principal Researcher, Microsoft"I know of no other study of the DVD 'revolution' that is as detailed and suggestive as this stylish, lucid investigation. An early scholarly foray into a field this massive, relatively new, and constantly changing cannot be expected to cover all the issues or answer all the questions, but this book does an admirable job raising important questions and identifying new directions in film reception." - Timothy Corrigan, Professor of English, Cinema Studies, and History of Art, University of Pennsylvania

An Overview of a fascinating technological and aesthetic era
By Bruce Eder
This book chronicles a history of one of the more successful technological developments in entertainment of the late twentieth century -- the Parkers delve into the personalities behind the public side of the DVD boom, especially as that boom affected the way ordinary people think of and approach film, and the roles that various disparate companies and personae played in that boom. They discuss the principal participants on both the technical and creative side (which, in the interests of fairness and candor, included this reviewer), with a special focus on The Criterion Collection and its history and evolution from a little-known boutique laserdisc (and book) venture in the early/middle 1980s into one of the major forces in the fields of film and high-end video.

It's an eminently readable account, and despite the seemingly dry title is laced with entertaining (and illuminating) quotes by and about the people involved. For this reader, it was a reminder of a time, back in 1985, when, walking down Fifth Avenue on an afternoon with a friend in the film business, we passed a man selling cheap video eiditions of public domain film titles, and we both had the same thought -- who could have imagined in the 1960s that we'd ever get to a time when people would be selling feature films on VHS tape for $3 each -- and who could have imagined that the audience in question could ever live in a world where movies were in even smaller, better packages? The answer is, a lot of the people represented in this book.
