Geoff is also a Visiting Fellow at the University of Northampton Business School and a director of the Air Movement and Control Association. He has doctorate degrees from Oxford University in the area of turbomachinery aerodynamics and from the University of Northampton in the area of leadership and team development. He also holds a masters degree in business administration from Cranfield University, a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Liverpool University, and is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Engineers. 

ANDREW KAKABADSE is Professor of International Management Development, Cranfield School of Management, UK. Andrew was the H. Smith Richardson Fellow at CCL, North Carolina, USA and is Visiting Professor at the University of Ulster; Macquarie Graduate School of Management; Thunderbird and at Swinburne University. He has co-authored books on community care and the development of policies for older people. Between 2003 and 2009, he was a member of the Executive Committee of the British Society of Gerontology and is a Trustee of Age Concern Bristol.

My interest in this subject began when I lived in Chile for six years, and gave talks and wrote articles on certain stories that fascinated me at that time, including the British involvement in mining (especially nitrate and coal), in building railways, and the key Battle of Coronel at the outbreak of the First World War. I also made a promise to myself that one day I would tackle the immense story of the British presence in the history of the entire country. This is the book, and it is unique. The last attempt to write a comprehensive history of the British presence in Chile was an idiosyncratic book published in 1900.
   Here are some of the topics covered. Charles Darwin spent seventeen very formative months in Chile. The bi-centenary of his birth (and 150 years since the publication of On the Origin of Species) was celebrated in 2009. British sailors and soldiers were instrumental in winning Chile's War of Independence from Spain. The bi-centenary of the Declaration of Independence was celebrated in Chile in 2010. The Battle of Coronel will be remembered in 2014 - this was an unexpected defeat of the British navy and a key watershed in the war, and in British naval history.
   There is increasing interest in visiting Chile; some 60,000 visitors a year from the UK alone. One focus is on visiting Patagonia, and the often bizarre stories connecting British pirates, sheep-farmers, and missionaries to this region are all told in my book. There are literally tens of thousands of descendants of British immigrants living today in Chile. One source estimates this number at 350,000 to 400,000 descendants.
   While bookshops in Chile have histories of the Germans, the Swiss, even the Yugoslavs, who settled in Chile, this is the first book to tell the story of the most important foreign group to impact on the country--the British--at every twist and turn of Chile's history since an English queen was Queen of Chile, and not as bystanders but as full participants.

Excellent Book, well researched and written

As an amateur historian reader, I have tried to read the most on British History, focusing on explorers, voyages, accounts of people about places or events mostly in the whole world and if that narrative connect to Chile, better off. So when I come to find this book, it was a real discovery. This book summarize all that, a very well researched book, really entertaining reading explaining hundreds of years of interaction between these two countries and the traces seen today in Chile. The best example of this connection happened in the War of 1879, a war that Chile fought with the Peru/Bolivia confederation, where names likes Condell, Lynch, Cox, Christie, Edwards, Leighton, Macpherson, Pratt, Rogers, Simpson, Smith, Souper, Stephens, Thomson, Walker, Warner, Williams, Wilson and Wood were among the officers of that time and more in the regular army, most of them of British extraction, most of them still present in Chile. One good thing about British people is that, wherever they travel, they always have the time to write their impressions and accounts, like Maria Graham visiting Chile in 1822.
