"This concise, perceptive book makes a valuable contribution to understanding modern poetry through the discipline of anthropology. Heuston (English, The Citadel) has chosen authors identified with specific regions (Ireland for Yeats and Heaney, New England for Frost, the South for Robert Penn Warren) and shows how the regions are not neutral backgrounds but dynamic constructs. The approach transcends the usual notions of regionalism and works especially well for Frost and Warren. Indeed, no one writing on Warren in the future can ignore Heuston's understanding of the subtle, conflicted notions of the South in this poet. Heuston is insightful on Warren's long poem Brother to Dragons, but even more interesting is his brilliant analysis of Warren's writings on race in the South. He shows that Frost's "New England" is a very complex notion. The cultural analysis and literary insight are excellent throughout, and the author uses an anthropological vocabulary with clarity. The lack of a final summation is jarring: the book ends abruptly. Bibliographical references come through the notes, not the most convenient form of documentation. A must-have book. Tamara Lizette Brown, PhD, is an associate professor of history and director of women's studies in the Department of History & Government at Bowie State University, and a former cultural historian with the Smithsonian Institution. 

Baruti N. Kopano, PhD, is an associate professor and departmental chair within the School of Global Journalism and Communication at Morgan State University. Prior to joining the Morgan faculty, he was an associate professor of mass communications and co-director of the Black Studies Program at Delaware State University.

FINALLY, someone did it!!!!!! I am elated to know that someone has finally tackled this subject. We are tired of our culture being RIPPED off. Finally, thank you Baruti for tackling this subject.

I highly recommend this book. We as Black people must do all we can to preserve the cultures we have forged out of blood, sweat and tears.

Round and round in gender circles

I am researching this and other works from the period for my own interest. When I started to read this book, I was carried along by the enthusiasm (there's heaps of it) of the writers and the genuinely interesting take they have on this Coptic tractate. The analysis runs for nearly one hundred pages and by about half way through I had the uncanny feeling of déjà vu, that I was reading the same stuff over and over, only worded a little differently. In fact the authors keep repeating their key points and they love long mouthfuls of wordfull wordy words. For example (p94) 'Through the combination of its overwhelming ironies, the focus on the "I," and its endlessly and improvisational rhythm, it opens up a space for provisional and embodied identities beyond the dominant presumption.' I think they may have been talking about their own writing.

Hal Taussig and co. have certainly put great effort into the translation which seemingly builds on the works of previous translators, particularly in regard to gender ambiguity. I would have been happier if they had cut the flowery intellectual hyperbole and reduced their thesis to 30 pages instead of 100. I was also disappointed that there is very little solid reference to historical context and culture - I would have liked more meat and less gravy. But the book is still well worth the buy if you are inspired by this fabulous work from the ancient world.

Historian Zuroff began a career of Holocaust study in the archives of Israel’s Yad Vashem memorial, continued it as a researcher for the U.S. Department of Justice, and, at present, represents the Simon Wiesenthal Center. Evolving from a scholar to a detective, Zuroff underscores the documentary evidence needed to open a case and explains his methods for bringing fugitive war criminals from World War II to justice. Once he identifies an individual, and ascertains that he or she is living, Zuroff alerts, via publicity or direct communication, the authorities of the country that harbors the person. About the Author

Dr. Efraim Zuroff is a historian who specializes in Holocaust history and established and directs the Israel Office of the Simon Wiesenthal Center and coordinates the Center's worldwide research on Nazi war criminals. Operation Last Chance (www.operationlastchance.org) which he launched together with Aryeh Rubin and the Targum Shlishi Foundation (www.targumshlishi.org) has been active in fourteen countries on three continents. He lives with his family in Efrat, Israel.

Making a Difference in an Indifferent World

Many of us felt in the decades after World War II that the nations of the world, and particularly the democracies, would maintain a commitment to fight Nazi ideology, including antisemitism, and to bring the perpetrators of the Holocaust to justice. Dr. Zuroff's book is infused with his passionate pursuit of justice. However, the book is also infused with a palpable sense of frustration at the indifference and, in many cases, the active opposition to the prosecution of known mass murderers in both Western democracies and emerging Eastern European democracies. This book tells many gripping stories, each different and enlightening. There are heroes in this story but there are also many, many villians, governement officials over the past 25 years who simply lacked the will to take action. The book is informative and well-researched without bogging the reader down in inordinate detail on each case. It is as much a trip of the heart as of the mind. When I finished the book I was filled with conflicting emotions: admiration for Dr. Zuroff and his team for their lonely but tenacious efforts, pride in the role that the US governement has played in bringing these murderers to justice within the bounds of our system of law, and angry at the many democracies around the world for whom the murder of 6 million is, in practical terms, a matter of little importance.

Insider's View of Hunting Nazis

The idea of sadistic mass murderers living happily ever makes our blood boil. Efraim Zuroff has dedicated most of his life to tracking down the perpetrators of the Holocaust to bring them to justice. Operation Last Chance shares his experience, with its high points and its many disappointments. The greatest challenge must be to continue the sacred quest, knowing that time isn't on his side. Zuroff's knowledge of the Holocaust is encyclopedic and he brings the reader to unknown landscapes like Croatia and Estonia. His search is aided by good people who are nauseated by the actions of the Nazis and by evil people whose boasting of past deeds sometimes brings their downfall.

A Personal Odyssey Against Evil

A MUST read -- enthralling and insightful. Anyone who is interested in some of the most important questions which arise in the aftermath of the Holocaust -- who are these people who committed such horrendous crimes, calmly killing hundreds and thousands of other human beings? how do we make sure that these evil criminals are punished? why do some people who did not take part in these awful crimes against humanity protect those who did? what should be done to ensure that all political actors, both states and multi-state organizations, accept upon themselves the responsibility to not allow the victims' posthumous demands for justice go unheard -- should immediately go out and buy this book.
