About the Author

H. Paul Jeffers (1934-2009) was an established military historian and author of seventy books. He worked as an editor and producer at ABC, CBS and NBC, and was the news director at both of New York City's all-news radio stations. This was his last book.

Alan Axelrod is the author of numerous popular history and historically rooted business and management books, including Bradley and Patton in The Great Generals Series, and the BusinessWeek bestsellers Patton on Leadership and Elizabeth I, CEO. He lives in Atlanta, Georgia.

General Wesley K. Clark was NATO's Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, and the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He is the author of A Time to Lead, as well as the best selling books Waging Modern War and Winning Modern Wars.

Concise, detailed, no-nonsense bio

This surely must rate as one of the better installments in the "Great Generals Series." There is a generous amount of detail in its 190 closely-printed pages, and all phases of Marshall's extraordinary and wide-ranging career are covered in due proportion.

George C. Marshall is one of those rare historical figures - especially in the fields of statecraft and military science - to whom seems to attach a remarkably insignificant degree of criticism and controversy, and even less venom & spite. In particular, his leadership in WWII and during the post-war European crisis appear virtually beyond reproach, perhaps to all but a perennially disgruntled fringe. Only the "loss of China" still sounds an ominous note, but the complexities of that situation are understandably beyond the scope of this book, and any indictment of Marshall on account of China's "loss" to the communists would require far more information than we are given here. But it is hard to imagine the ChiComs going down in defeat before anything less that a massive American intervention, on a scale comparable to, if not exceeding, the planned invasion of Japan - or else a massive nuclear campaign, neither scenario very likely in the immediate aftermath of WWII as the nation and the world concerned itself with picking up the pieces and attempting to put things back together. Lacking the proverbial "smoking gun", I propose that it would be disingenuous, simplistic, and unjust to blame Marshall for "losing" China. To his credit, the author does not proffer any such indictment.

The author's prose is fluent, but perhaps for over-use of the word "austere"; nevertheless there are a few questionable moments and editorial blunders:
p27: Archduke Franz Ferdinand, whose assassination in 1914 led to the Great War, is described as "aging". He was only 50, but the Emperor Franz Joseph was 84; perhaps that is who the author had in mind.
p28 "Marshall was keenly intensely frustrated" - keenly AND intensely.
p48: "the coal-rich Alsace" - it is simply Alsace, not "the Alsace".
p49: "this was a rather an important order" - a rather important order, or rather an important order?
p56: "Marshall made for charges in army procedures" - changes, perhaps.
p89: "the staff of Japanese embassy" - THE Japanese embassy.
p153: Marshall's trip to Paris is dated August 6, 1944, but Paris was not liberated until August 25, anyhow the following pages make clear this should read October 6.
p176: China is described as "the biggest nation on the planet". Most populous, yes, but Russia, USSR or no, has always been the biggest.
p178: "Marshall took the insight event further than Truman". Obviously this should read "even further".

But these are small shortcomings in an otherwise competently rendered, broadly informative account, and serves well to open the door to further study of one of the most important individuals of the 20th century.

Outstanding Biography!

Another great book in this series. This biography hits more than just the highpoints of Gen Marshall's life and career but doesn't ever get bogged-down. Not for someone who is doing an in-depth analysis of the man, but a super read to learn who the man was and understand many of the great deeds he did while serving his country in multiple capacities. I learned a lot and recommend the book for anyone with an interest in WW I, WW II and post WW II US and European history, or just about a great American.

Biography of US statesman and soldier George Catlett Marshall Jr.

George Catlett Marshall Jr., a revered soldier and statesman, served as US Army chief of staff during World War II and later as secretary of state and secretary of defense. A born leader, Marshall was, as Sir Winston Churchill described him, "the noblest Roman of them all." He stood resolute for what he believed and, as authors H. Paul Jeffers and Alan Axelrod make clear, the world is a better place because he did. Indeed, Europe would not exist in its present state if not for the Marshall Plan that rebuilt its shattered nations after World War II. getAbstract recommends Jeffers and Axelrod's short, readable biography to those interested in the attributes that leadership demands, as demonstrated by the luminous life of George Marshall.
