Brenda Maddox is an award-winning author and journalist. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Observer, The Times, and New Statesman. Her book Rosalind Franklin: The Dark Lady of DNA won the Los Angeles Times Science Book Award for 2002 and her book D. H. Lawrence: The Married Man won the Whitbread Biography Prize. Her book Nora was made into a film starring Ewan McGregor. She lives in London and Wales.

Extraordinary woman.

This was a bit dry for a biography. I am having a hard time putting my finger on what exactly was missing from this book, but it's possible the author was too emotionally removed from the subject matter. George Eliot (Marian Evans) certainly had enough loves and heartaches to make for a more engaging read. In fact, I'm tempted to go in search of a meatier Eliot biography at some point.
Don't get me wrong, it's not terrible, but I was expecting something more along the lines of Claire Tomalin's excellent 'Jane Austen: A Life.' This was not in the same category, in my opinion. Still, I would recommend this book for those seeking a short Eliot biography.

A well-researched sympathetic portrait

This excellent little biography concentrates on George Eliot's relationships, starting with her parents and siblings, and then onward to the friendships, affairs of the heart, and marriages. How she styled herself as George Eliot from Marian Evans is fascinating. How she held court and overcame her almost disabling introversion is well told. This author has researched well and given a sympathetic portrait of an emotional life spent writing despite ill-health and family debacles. Many house moves, many travels, many visits, and much research and learning interrupt the writing. But they fill this supremely successful author's life with such a wealth - a depth and breadth - of understanding of the human condition it is breathtaking. Her output was prolific and she enjoyed international renown in her time. This biography is enjoyable enough to read twice.

George Eliot in Love is one of those books that you could read over and over again and not get bored. I love that George didn't live by society's standards. She was true to herself and that in itself is a great achievement. She's a strong, powerful woman who you can't help but love. Read this book, the writing is phenomenal!
