"New World Irish" a fresh perspective cultural clashes in America

I began reading this book with a certain amount of skepticism at the scope of the challenge Jack Morgan chose for his book. But I was pleasantly surprised with the intellectually stimulating, wide ranging coverage given such a broad subject in such a limited space. "New World Irish" is an examination of the effect of Irish Culture on American literary Culture and the reciprocal effect of the American Culture on the Irish-American literary culture. Rather than attempt to close his book with a chapter of broad conclusions, Morgan chose to focus on fourteen examples which he then examines in detail from both Irish-American and American viewpoints. With only a couple of exceptions Morgan's examples are a literary rather than a historical dissection of his chosen Irish and American cultural clashes. Using significant examples of both contemporary and modern literary opinions of a given work or concept, Morgan adds his voice to clarify the impact of what we have just read. The book is erudite but I, with a limited exposure to the literary references chosen, found Morgan's imaginative thought process easy to follow. Anyone interested in the Irish in America, being faced with an endless string of immigrant/famine books which multiply like rabbits each year, will find Morgan's approach delightfully and refreshingly different.
