Thinking Outside the Box

This book first appeared in an expensive hardback edition in 2011. Kudos to the publisher for realizing---in 2014---that it deserved to be made more widely available. If Albert Schweitzer were here today, he would agree with Professor Rud that the notion of "Reverence for Life" belongs in every child's memory bank of educational experience and that, in fact, education on any level is impossible without profound respect for humanity. It is, in a sense, unfortunate that such a book represents "outside the box" thinking. After all, Albert Schweitzer never wrote an educational treatise. It is the author, therefore, who has made the connection between a man who taught young boys and served as director of the Protestant Theological Seminary in Strasbourg in the early twentieth century and the potential for enriching the educational experience a century later. As a Dewey scholar and an engaged administrator of far-reaching educational programs at Washington State University, Rud's "corner of the field" has to do with the moral underpinnings of education. Where better to begin than with the deceptively simple idea of "Reverence for Life"?
