A Text Above the Next.

A lot of people want to sell books to an academic department chair, so my mailbox has been inundated with catalogs touting "the latest publications" and the "cutting edge research" of what they hope will be the texts I recommend or at best order for the next semester. Over the past few years, thumbing through those catalogs has been a ritual of sameness--each after the last promises to blow the lid off of the western hegemonic stranglehold on our culture and worst of all on the children! Don't get me wrong; there may well be a western hegemonic stranglehold. After fifty or sixty books, however, I am at a loss to see any new ground--in theory or content--being broken. Imagine my delight, then, when I found a fresh, energetic take on the subject coming from my own faculty.
Emilie Zaslow's Feminism, Inc.: Coming of Age in Girl Power Media Culture is well researched, clearly focused and refreshingly uncluttered with prior expectation. Zaslow interviews individuals and focus groups of young women from a variety of backgrounds and reports what they say, then takes what has come to be an unusual step in the present state of identity politics and culture studies literature--she accepts what they say as valid and meaningful because they said it. Zaslow refuses to "leap to cause" by following an oppositional textual analysis with evidence that these young women have been clearly duped by big media. She recognizes that young women lead "neither fully autonomous nor . . . scripted lives." She lets women speak for themselves, and then presents their contributions within the context of a well researched, clearly articulated focus on Girl Power as a social movement/trend. Zaslow provides a historical introduction and a coherent review of the literature, and then she allows the subjects of her inquiry to assert themselves free of questioner bias and post hoc inquisition.
I guess I should find something to complain about, so that I cannot be charged with pandering to a colleague. At times, the necessity to read like a scholarly publication results in to kind of scholar-speak that can put off casual readers. There is some citation chaining (Stuart Hall explained that Althusser believed . . .) and the typical academic undersell (It is not uncommon for . . .), but these are tiny fleas on the coat of an animal that is clearly "best of show." The best compliment I can give to this book is is that it was created as a text but is a great casual read. Students will learn from it, but its subjects, their parents and the people who seek to profit from them would be wise to read it as well.
