About the Author
Greg Tobin is the author of several books on the Catholic Church. He was the editor of The Catholic Advocate, and during the April 2005 papal transition he appeared frequently on national radio and TV programs as an expert commentator on the popes and the papal election process. His books Selecting the Pope and Holy Father were widely used as authoritative resources on the subject and were quoted in the Los Angeles Times and The New York Times, as well as the Associated Press. He lives in West Orange, NJ.

A POPULAR CATHOLIC COMMENTATOR/AUTHOR EXPLAINS HOLIDAYS

Greg Tobin "was the editor of 'The Catholic Advocate,' and appears frequently on national radio and TV programs as an expert commentator on the popes and papal election process." He is also the author of Selecting the Pope: Uncovering the Mysteries of Papal Elections, Council, Conclave, Holy Father: Pope Benedict XVI: Pontiff for a New Era, etc.
He writes in the Preface to this 2011 book, "The organizing principle of this book is to break the year into its natural four seasons, then to devote each chapter to a holiday (or holiday season) or sacred theme that has become---or remains---a secular touchstone in our time... Although this book is not a history of the saints, they are inextricably a part of the calendar of the church---and many of them retain a hold on the popular imagination. Therefore they will figure prominently in our discussion of holidays and holy days."

"Although it was not among the earliest festivals of the Christian Church, by the mid-fourth century, through popular practice that was then sanctioned by Church authority, December 25 was established in Rome as the 'birthday' of Christ. "It has not helped the process of sorting out the conflicts around dating Christmas that the older-style Julian calendar was replaced by the more contemporary Gregorian Calendar, which differed by almost exactly the span between December 25 and January 6! Catholic, Entertaining, and Richly Informative

With a range that explores topics as diverse as Burning Man and the Gregorian calendar, "Holy Holidays!" is truly catholic. And yet it is solidly Catholic, too. Most of all, this volume is thoroughly engaging as it educates by means of historical context, liturgical tradition, cultural background, and theological foundation. Greg Tobin not only offers "the Catholic origins of celebration," as the subtitle promises, but also shines valuable light that any secular reader, or even atheist, can benefit from and appreciate.
